Care Services

If you stayed in a care service listed below for at least one night, you can take part.

Provision of School Education

This covers:

  • Boarding schools
  • List G Schools:- institutions in the past which catered for young people with special needs and specific mental health issues.
  • Residential schools
  • Special schools:- This term was used in the past for schools for children with disabilities.
  • Summer Schools:- These schools took secondary pupils from schools in deprived areas during the summer vacation in the past and were based in rural areas.  .
  • Youth seminaries:- These institutions were designed to train priests for the Catholic Church and were boarding schools.

Provision of Accommodation

This would cover:

  • Residential care provision for children by or on behalf of a local authority at any time, for example: Children’s Home, Young Person’s Unit, Young People’s Centre, Youth Centre, Adolescent Care, Orphanage, Intensive Support Unit, Children’s House, Children’s Unit, Children’s Resource Centre, Residential Nursery, Children’s Village , Respite Services, Short Break Services.
  • Hostel accommodation for pupils at school away from home
  • Supported accommodation for young people leaving care (but not in individual tenancies)
  • Supported accommodation for young people with disabilities up to the age of 18 (but not in individual tenancies)

Persons on Remand, or Sentence to Imprisonment or Detention

 This includes a wide variety of institutions, such as:

  • Approved School
  • Assessment centre
  • Borstal
  • List D School
  • Prison
  • Remand home or centre
  • Secure Unit or Secure Accommodation
  • Young Offenders Institu

Other Care Instituition Types

  • Residential care accommodation for children from 1970 which is not provided by or on behalf of a local authority, for example: Children’s Home, Young Person’s Unit, Young People’s Centre, Youth Centre, Adolescent Care, Orphanage, Intensive Support Unit, Children’s House, Children’s Unit, Children’s Resource Centre, Residential Nursery, Children’s Village
  • Children’s Homes before 1970 not under local authority management
  • Evacuation Camp/Centre
  • Care Home for People with Disabilities
  • Residential respite or short break service
  • Poor Law Institution
